Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba. Aikido involves throws and joint locks which derive from Aiki-jiutsu; as well as techniques from the art of swordsmanship, Kenjutsu. It is considered Budo, or the path of martial art that implies self-purification and spiritual development; rather than tactics and self-defense. Aikido focuses on neutralizing the attack. This is done by the practitioner blending with the attacker’s energy through entering and turning motions and redirecting the force instead of opposing or clashing with it. This is why aikido is often referred to as the way of the peaceful warrior.
